My wife and I did this to 4 rooms and a hallway, about 800 sq, all on my second floor. get the right tools for the job if you’re going to sheet rock it yourself - they will absolutely pay for themselves over the course of the project. take time off work, rent a dumpster, bring some friends over and try to get all of the demolition done as quickly as possible so you can get rid of the plaster dust ASAP. Don’t try to do the demolition one room at a time. think this through before you decide which way to go. you’ll be adding somewhere between 1/2 and 1 inch to the thickness of your walls which could cause issues with existing door and window trim. if you do try to sheet rock over the existing plaster you’ll need to figure out how to handle window and door openings. Use a respirator, glasses, and someone else’s clothes when you open up your ceiling. The superfine (in my case dust bowl-era) dust and nastiness that lives above an old plaster ceiling is the stuff of nightmares. Way back when, 2x4s were actually 2” x 4” which may come into play as you are trying to match sheet rock with plaster take that into account as you try to put up and align your sheet rock - your tape and mud guy will hate you. In one closet (where the plaster was in bad shape) I tore out the plaster & left the lath and just rocked directly over it (screwing to the studs). I kinda wish I would have done that more. But, In a back stairwell, I actually just rocked over the (structurally sound) plaster on the walls and ceiling. but I have a feeling I would have gone crazy trying to patch/skim coat the old plaster to a smooth enough finish. other than running electrical/plumbing, I probably could have gotten away with leaving the plaster walls. so much easier to do with no wall covering.) then just hung the rock like normal. I pulled down all the plaster, then put up 1x over the lath along each ceiling joist to screw the rock to using 2 1/2” screws to make it all the way into the joist.Įxterior walls - no insulation in the house, so it was worth the time & effort to do the exterior walls (plus we replaced all the windows, so we had to reframe around them. cracked, separated from the lath, fell down easily when provoked. Here’s my advice (your mileage may vary).Ĭeiling - seemed to be the most “suspect”’of all the plaster in the house. Just (literally today) finished sheetrocking a small 2 bedroom built in the 30s that was lath & plaster as part of a “down to the studs” remodel. TBD on whether we will take on this particular challenge given that there are many other projects that we also want to spend time and money on! Not sure if this is relevant, but we are in Oregon (the dry half, not the rainy half).Įdit: Thanks to all for the advice! Seems like I was maybe underestimating the size of the challenge I had set for myself. Other benefits include letting us update wiring and insulation as we go (if it's needed).Ĭurious if anyone here has attempted something similar or has any experience with plaster walls! From my brief Googling and Youtubing, it seems like this may be a relatively straightforward (though time-consuming and messy) project. I'm considering replacing the lath and plaster with sheetrock as we take on projects in each room. Some of the plaster walls and ceilings are cracking and some are in good shape. The house has mostly lath and plaster walls on the inside except for a few places where there has been more recent remodeling. The house has solid bones, but is definitely a bit of a fixer-upper, so we are getting ready to embark on a journey of learning many new home improvement skills (both of us are relatively new to this). My partner and I are buying a house that's just over 100 years old (not historic, just old). If the music is also currently playing, sanity drain will pause, but the music will technically continue. The music box can be handheld or placed on the floor, the latter being the only safe way to discard the box without triggering a cursed hunt before the ghost event. If the music box is within 5 metres of the ghost, it will trigger a ghost event where the ghost manifests and begins to walk towards the box. Once activated, if the ghost is within 20 metres of the music box, it will sing along, broadcasting its current location while remaining invisible. The music box cannot be activated during a hunt, and can only be used once. Doing so will end the setup phase early if it is ongoing. Slicing isn’t just about drums our example Live set includes a Simpler that’s pre-loaded with a 1-bar sample that we can divide into regions. Sliced beats are automatically installed into a new drum rack, with convenient macro controls preconfigured and ready to use – as always, macros are most handy for use with hardware controllers, including Push. There’s nothing to stop you from dropping an entirely different sample on a particular slot, or even replacing the Simpler entirely with another software instrument, whether it’s a synth like Wavetable or one of Max for Live’s new DrumSynth instruments. This can involve practical effects like compressors or EQs, or more noticeable ones like delays on percussion hits. Once your beat is sliced, there are so many things you can do to it my favourite part is applying different audio effects to individual slices. In the real world, not every drum loop is like that, but it’s possible to customise the slicing results and manually edit the start and end of each slice – they’re all contained in Simplers, after all. Our source beat is very straight, being programmed in the first place, so it slices easily. We begin by slicing an acoustic drum beat this can be more or less a one-step operation, although there are plenty of customisation options available. After all, 10 is the current version, and if you don’t have it already, you can always try the demo, which is fully functional for 30 days (system requirements for Live 10 have been bumped up from Live 9, so check before you download). Slice and diceįrom now on, all of our Ableton Live tutorials will be based around Live 10, and that goes for any demo material we supply as well. Live has the necessary tools to slice audio any way you want with Simpler and Sampler, and it’s an enjoyably mouse-free experience for Push users. This can be something as simple as slicing and rearranging a drum beat, right up to chopping field recordings into tiny slices and using randomisation and effects to mix them and spray them out into a whole new structure. Not the buffet and other dinners out, not the movie popcorn, not even the gummies that BIL brought over. Incidentally, it was one of three desserts she delivered during our short visit and I personally blame her for the 5 pounds I gained while on vacation. MIL’s neighbor stopped by one day to deliver a pie. You know how phonebooks have those “community” pages up front with maps and golf courses and points of interest? Do you ever look at it? Me either. We spent a lot of time swimming and most of the time just relaxing, but the one very noteworthy thing we did was to visit a safari zoo. (And having an on-site baby sitter so we could go to dinner and a movie for our anniversary was a bonus.) The trip wasn’t intended to be anything other than a chance for the girls to see their grandma. This article originally appeared Augon .Īs I mentioned in my prior post about fishing, we recently spent some time visiting my MIL in Alabama. Feel free to correct me on other animals I mislabeled. Needless to say, this re-dedication of that old post has those errors corrected. As I took a trip down memory lane reading an old post about Harmony Safari Park Zoo in Huntsville, Alabama, I realized my error. During a trip a few years ago to a natural history museum, I discovered that I was one of many people incorrectly identifying bison as buffalo. Or maybe some of what I learned in my younger days and forgot is finally sinking in and sticking. As the kids have gotten older and we’ve traveled more, taken educational tours, visited more museums and taken more adventures, I’ve certainly learned a lot. The park was good and the experience for our Granddaughter was well worth the trip and the admission price. There’s an saying that you’re never too old to learn something. but they will follow you around the park. If you don’t want to feed them, simply roll up your window - they’ll go away. They’re quite aggressive and we had one deer try to put his front feet up into the driver’s window but we pushed him away. The animals, especially the Emus & deer want al the food you’ll give them. There were lots & lots of pigs & piglets wondering throughout the grounds as well. The owner said she was hoping to reopen it next year. A bit disappointing (to me) was the petting zoo was closed due to Covid. The Zebras were off site while birthing their young. There were lots of deer and Emus, horses, goats, ostriches, peacocks, some lamas, turtles & tortoises, a Chanel, a giraffe, a gator, and probably many more I’ve left off. Needless to say, we went through the park 3 times and got one refill. You could get refills on the same day for an additional $5.00. She had the most fun.EVER! Admission was $11 each and a bucket of food was $10. We took our Granddaughter to her “first ever” safari park - the Harmony Park Safari. Maybe one day we will be back in the area and the reptile exhibits will be available. Overall this is a great experience with more variety of animals than a petting zoo. We got stuck for a little bit by a large bull who was drinking water but eventually he got bored and moved. You are entering the main enclosure and are subject to what the animals are wanting to do. The giraffe, camel and tortoise seemed isolated in small pens. The cons- as some have pointed out the conditions of the enclosures we saw aren’t the best. Kids love activities like this and ours definitely did. Went through twice after wanting a refill on the bucket. We escaped relatively unharmed, minus the zebra that was chewing on our door handle? Now who can say they’ve had that happen? We’ve only seen something like this in Canada (Parc Omega) so we found this fun. We didn’t ask about car rentals due to COVID, but we did know the risk of using our car. It was only open for drive through due to COVID. We found it and decided to check it out with an 8 and 6 year old and a baby. This experience has positive and negative aspects. I’ve learned over the years to just report back anything that I see in front of the headlights: Are they yellow stripes or white? What’s on the side of the road? Is there vegetation? What kind? What’s the weather? What are the sounds? If I capture the experience all along the way, the structure starts to reveal itself. You can only see as far as your headlights-” but you keep going until you get there. Doctorow: “Writing a novel is like driving at night. So you can dream by being curious-by being curious enough to report back what’s in front of your narrative eye. And if you have that, talent makes no difference, whether you’ve got it or not.” I know the exact quote by heart: “Insight, curiosity, to wonder, to mull and to muse why it is that man what does what he does. Late in his life, Faulkner was asked what quality a writer most needs-and he said not talent, but curiosity. These are all part of your toolbox-but that toolbox will always remain locked if the writer is not genuinely curious about what he or she is writing about. All these things we can be taught, or learn on our own from reading. To bring in at least three of the five senses to activate a scene. We can learn to use active verbs instead of passive verbs. We can to choose concrete language over overly abstract language. But what does it fucking mean, “dream with language?” I think this is what happens. OK, I know: It’s one thing to quote Bausch. But that’s when the work starts to have a beating heart. Things start to happen under your pencil that you don’t want to happen, or don’t understand. What happens then is, you start writing something you don’t even really want to write about. So I’ve learned over the years to free-fall into what’s happening. And all these years later, that’s the thrill I write to get: to feel things start to happen on their own. If you allow them to do what they’re going to do, think and feel what they’re going to think and feel, things start to happen on their own. It was exciting, and even a little terrifying. It’s writing from the outside in instead of the inside out.īut during my very early writing, certainly before I’d published, I began to learn characters will come alive if you back the fuck off. I’ve learned, for me at least, it’s a dead road. I was writing stories hoping they would say something thematic, or address something that I was wrestling with philosophically. When I began to write, I was deeply self-conscious. This was my main problem when I was just starting out: I was trying to say something. You can hear the false note in this kind of writing. I think it leads to contrived work, frankly, no matter how beautifully written it might be. You think, “I need this to happen so some other thing can happen.” There’s an aspect of controlling the material that I don’t think is artful. You’re making something up when you think out a scene, when you’re being logical about it. There’s a profound difference between making something up and imagining it. I began to learn characters will come alive if you back the fuck off. As a writing teacher, if I say nothing else to my students, it’s this. I think the desire to step into someone else’s dream world, is a universal impulse that’s shared by us all. And I really believe-this is just from years of daily writing-that good fiction comes from the same place as our dreams. But the one that’s stayed with me over the years, from Richard Bausch, has become a sort of mantra for me: There were a lot of heavy hitters in there offering truly wise and helpful advice. He talked to me by phone from his house north of Boston.Īndre Dubus III: Years ago, I read a book called Letters to a Fiction Writer, which asked about 20 established writers to send their best advice out into the world. Dubus is the author of books including The House of Sand and Fog (a finalist for the National Book Award), The Garden of Last Days, and Townie. In the first story, a cuckolded man stalks his wife with a video camera in the last, a young woman’s world is shattered when a sexually explicit image of her surfaces online. We discussed what it means to write into the unknown, how to do it, and why writers should.ĭirty Love contains four linked novellas about love and betrayal in a coastal town. What do novelists mean when they say things like my character showed me the way? But my conversation with Andre Dubus III, whose new book Dirty Love is out this week, addressed the challenges and joys of writing without pre-determination. The latter approach can sound odd, even shamanistic. Though Brimstone is the first of the authors' "Diogenes trilogy," his part is very small here he will play a much larger role in the following two books, Dance of Death and The Book of the Dead.īrimstone makes fine use of Preston's experience living in Italy (during which time he became involved in the Monster of Florence case) to paint authentic atmosphere in the second half, when the case takes Pendergast and D'Agosta to Cremona in search of a the Stradivarius violin nicknamed "Stormcloud." This violin was long thought lost because the virtuoso who had it last did not have it on his person upon his death. (Even his name is a reference to the gentlemen's club Mycroft frequents in the Conan Doyle stories.)Īs the group works hard to solve the current case, a letter arrives for Pendergast from Diogenes it's a challenge, and Pendergast works to complete this solution so he can focus his energies on his brother. If Pendergast is Sherlock Holmes, then Diogenes is both Mycroft and Moriarty. Other literary referents include Stephen King's The Shining and Edgar Allan Poe's " The Cask of Amontillado," which lends itself nicely to a cliffhanger ending.īrimstone briefly introduces readers to Pendergast's brother Diogenes, who we're not surprised to learn is criminally insane (since we learned in The Cabinet of Curiosities that insanity runs rampant throughout the Pendergast lineage, sometimes beneficially but usually not). While Preston and Child's characters are always interesting, a particular highlight of Brimstone is one Count Fosco - seemingly lifted part and parcel from Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White - whose pet mice here are robotic and who emerges from the book as one of the series' great villains. (For regular readers who may be wondering, regular series characters Bill Smithback and Nora Kelly are off on their honeymoon and do not appear in this book.) Captain Laura Hayward takes command and demands that all be by the book, with regular meetings for updates and all paperwork cleared through her office. The next victim is Nigel Cutforth, dead it seems of a similar form of spontaneous human combustion, as described in Doctor Faustus and other tales of soul-selling ("the fire within" of the medievals), merely lending more evidence of the Devil's seeming involvement. Braskie doesn't want the lowly sergeant involved in such a high-profile case, but when Pendergast has D'Agosta named FBI liaison, the duo are officially working together again. The medical examiner has trouble determining Grove's time of death when the corpse's temperature still measures 108☏, and "good Old Testament brimstone" is found. When Pendergast later IDs himself as a special agent of the FBI, Braskie reluctantly welcomes him aboard. (D'Agosta had left NYPD homicide as a lieutenant to write books, couldn't make a go of it, and subsequently had to get a lower-paying job with the Southampton PD.)īut D'Agosta's politically ambitious pain-in-the-kiester boss, Lieutenant Braskie breaks up the reunion, seeing Pendergast only as a trespasser. The following morning, the crime scene reunites a certain Aloysius Pendergast with Sergeant Vincent D'Agosta. The cloven hoofprint on the floor suggests that the Devil had finally come for the town's most notorious resident.
